Doodpathri Budgam Kashmir (Jammu & Kashmir)


Doodpathri also known as ‘’The Valley of Milk’’ is one the appealing hill stations located in central Kashmiri’s Budgam district in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Having an altitude of about 9000 feet from the sea level and situated at a distance of 45 kms from the summer capital Srinagar, it is one of the beautiful and fascinating meadows with green pastures from all the sides, looks like a green carpet has been spread over the meadow.

  • Derivation of name ‘‘the valley of Milk’’

Actually the derivation of the name is not completely known however there are different views regarding its derivation. There are different beliefs, from where Doodpathri got the name ‘the valley of milk’. One of the most known  view is that water rushing through the green woods looks like the milk is flowing, giving it the name of Doodpathri or The Valley Of Milk.
The other reason why this place is called the valley of Milk because it is believed that the grazing cattles of this particular place produces a large quantity of milk, thereby giving it a name Doodpathri or The Valley of Milk.
The third reason why this place got the name Doodpathri is that it is believed that Sheikh Noor Ud  Din Noorani (RA) popularly known as Sheikh Ul Aalam was in search of water for offering his prayers, while he was in search of water, he tried to intrude the ground with his stick and he saw milk pouring out of ground, then Sheikh Ul Aalam asked milk that you can be used only for drinking purposes and at once milk changed into water and this event made this place to be known as Doodpathri.

  • How to reach:

Doodpathri,as already described above is located in central Kashmiri’s Budgam district (Jammu & Kashmir) and can be accessed through two different routes

Route1 via Budgam (apprx. 42 km).

Srinagar---------Budgam--------Khansahib----------Raiyar-------Doodpathri

Route 2 via gulmarg.

If you are visiting Gulmarg then this is a must visit place and will take around 53kms to reach from Gulmarg.Here is the route
